WSS Membership

Thinking of becoming a member of the Wilfrid Sellars Society?

There is a steady (and we believe growing) current of interest in Wilfrid Sellars’s philosophy.  Since we think this is a Good Thing, we hope that the formation of the Wilfrid Sellars Society (WSS) will

• provide a site where all those interested in Sellars and his philosophical views can make contact with similarly interested people

• provide a forum in which questions and issues concerning Sellarsian philosophy, its background and context, its articulation, its justification, and its consequences can receive open and informed discussion

• provide a medium for announcements and notifications of conferences, symposia, colloquia, recent publications, etc. relevant to Sellars and philosophy in a Sellarsian vein.

• organize events that will further scholarship on and discussion of Sellarsian philosophy.

We intend to begin modestly.  An initial meeting of the WSS is planned in conjunction with the next meeting of the Eastern Division APA, and we are setting up this website as the central contact point for the society and its members.  Please register as a member of the society; how ambitious the activities of the WSS can get will depend almost entirely on the number and dedication of our members.

Because our initial plans are modest, we do not assess any dues.  As the society grows and develops more ambitious plans, there may well come a time when membership dues will be appropriate, but that time is not now.   However, it will be possible to make a donation to the society, which will be used to defray the expenses associated with the website and any expenses associated with the meeting of the society at the APA (such as multi-media equipment rental).

We encourage you to let us know what services the WSS can offer its members, and how you think we can best support philosophy in a Sellarsian key.

  2. This looks promising. You should add a WordPress link for those of us that are (as this site is, itself) using their CMS for maintaining a blog or personal website.

I look forward to getting a sense of other people’s readings of Sellars–for my part, I don’t think you can properly tell the story of the twentieth century projects in language and science, pragmatism, or Wittgenstein without at the least a mention of him.

  3. Hi Nathan – Are you thinking of a blog roll or something like that? I’m pretty new to this whole thing and am not sure what you’re requesting. But I’m happy to do whatever makes the site more user friendly.
